Save our Green Belt!

Rossendale Borough Council recently approved the building of 131 houses on green fields off Grane / Holcombe road.

Grane Residents’ Association have been standing up to protect the environment and the rights of local residents for over 30 years. It’s getting harder and harder to fend off builders who want to pave paradise and put up a parking lot right here in our countryside.

Rossendale Borough Council recently approved the building of 131 houses on green fields off Grane / Holcombe Road. This permission has been granted and it cannot be changed UNLESS the builders fail to meet over thirty special conditions such as ensuring there are proper flood management and drainage mechanisms in place and using the correct building techniques etc.

It is our intention at GRASS to monitor that every single one of these conditions is met on time. We also want to ensure that, if the building does go ahead, then there is no cutting of corners which might lead to things like catastrophic floods crashing through your front door during an unprecedented rainfall. These are all things that need serious consideration especially during these uncertain times with climate change being something we are all having to think about more and more. Remember, the value and insurability of your home depends very much on Flood Risk.

This is such an unspoilt landscape, we must fight to keep it this way.

An ancient hedge like this can never be replaced, we must fight to stop it being destroyed.

In 1993, a Government Inspector ruled that this site should remain undeveloped yet the Council have now decided to reverse that decision and allow building on an area inhabited by wildlife that is environmentally important because it acts as a water sponge to hold rainwater away from our roads and houses. This reversal raises concerns for all of us who love and cherish our home.

Currently, there are only a few hands on deck at GRASS so we are appealing for volunteers to support us in continuing our mission.

We rely on local people - the more people join in, the more we can share the task ahead of us to continue to protect our homes and the environment we want to preserve for future generations to enjoy for decades.

We really welcome your input - for example
• if you are a young family who would like to know that there will be enough school places and wonderful walks for your children to benefit from;
• if you are a commuter who might not be able to get your car out of your drive due to increased numbers of cars on the roads;
• if you have some specialist skills to support us in very specific ways
• if you are someone who loves and appreciates the natural world
• if you have concerns about getting an appointment in our already overwhelmed GP and Dentist surgeries willingness to help is far more important than any skills you may have.

Do you live anywhere on this map? We need you
