A Walk around Grane Reservoirs

On Sunday 24th September, we organised a guided tour around the 3 reservoirs of Grane. The weather forecast for the day was terrible and as a result a few people understandable cancelled. However 10 hardy souls met at the Holden Arms Car park and set off down the lane to Holden Wood Reservoir.

The walk then took us up to the quarry on Musbury Heights to look at the ruins of the old chimney from the scrubbing mill. From their we walked along the side of the hill and took in wonderful views of Ogden Reservoir and the Grane Valley.

Carrying on, we arrived at Calf Hey reservoir and visited the sites of Hartley House and Lower Ormerod’s. We had been expecting to get very wet but the gods were with us as we continued up to Clough Head cafe for a brew and piece of cake, and the only rain we saw all day was a light shower as we enjoyed a well earned rest under cover.

The final part of the walk took us along the path down towards Heap Clough, that was built with the help of Grane Residents Association. We then visited Mary’s Wood, which was again another project that Grane Residents undertook and involved planting hundreds of trees over several years.

After visiting Haslingden Cemetery, we arrived back at the car park some 3.5 hours later after the 6 mile round journey. Everyone said that they really enjoyed it and we will be looking to organise more walks in 2024.
